Art School: A More Practical Choice Than Your Parents Think

If you tell your parents that you want to go to art school, they might have visions of you starving in an attic in Paris, sponging off their retirement funds because you're unemployed, or worse. Of course, you could end up doing this, but it's much more likely that your art school training will have you working in motion pictures, television, or advertising -- or perhaps a printing, publishing or software company. An art school education can help you develop your talent into a highly employable set of skills and knowledge.

Art is big business with an enormous variety of employment possibilities. These can be divided into four major career paths, all of which are served by an art school education.

Art Directors
Art directors take a strategic view of projects, formulating concepts and reviewing content for periodicals, newspapers, and other media. They are responsible for design and production of material and manage people involved in copywriting, art work, and layout design.

Fine Artists
Fine artists usually specialize in one or  two art forms, such as painting, illustration, sketching, sculpting, or restoration. They may work for themselves, or they may work for galleries, museums, government art departments, and publishers.

Multimedia Artists
Multimedia artists and animators create special effects, animation, or other visual images using film, video, computers or other digital and electronic media. Nowadays game software accounts for some 40% of people employed in this category.

Designers
"Designers" is a general term covering a range of commercial arts: for example, graphic designers, fashion designers, interior designers, and product designers.

The unifying factor of all these career paths is the right higher education qualification in art, preferably from an established art school. If you have the talent, art school gives you the opportunity to turn it into a lucrative career, whether you are self-employed or work for a company.
